If you’re ready to build an effective email marketing strategy, there are a few things you need to think about and implement before you start building out your content.

Think of your whole email list as leads or potential customers. These people have signed up to your list because they are interested in what YOU have to offer. Not only does your marketing strategy benefit you and the amount of sign ups you will get, but it also benefits your current subscribers. With your emails you should be addressing a pain point in your audience, or solving a problem that they have… they get the juicy and valuable content from you and in turn you build your authority and credibility… with your subscribers coming to you first when they are ready to invest.

Here are my top five tips on what to implement when building out your email marketing strategy…

Get A Welcome Sequence Set Up

The first email you send will be the most important email you send. The open rate for a welcome email is around 58% generally, which is a huge percentage when you think that the average open rate of a day to day email is around 21%.

Think of it as building a new relationship every time you have someone sign up to your list. Each new person is a fresh lead or potential customer, so you want to give them a reason to stay as soon as you can!

If you’re going to be offering a lead magnet (which we will go into in more detail shortly) then the welcome email is the perfect way to deliver this. However, I would recommend having a few different welcome sequences set up depending on where and why these subscribers are signing up. Always have a welcome sequence for your lead magnet, but have a welcome sequence set up for people signing up straight from your website sign up form too!

Create Some Lead Magnets To Grow Your List

A lead magnet is essentially a freebie that you offer your audience to gain subscribers on your list. With the freebie, we are wanting to attract new leads and customers to our list so we can get hold of them and nurture the shit out of the relationship!

A lead magnet will grow your audience faster than anything else can. Offer something valuable to your target audience and they will be more than willing to trade their email address for it. PLUS chances are that if they are attracted to your lead magnet, they will have an interest in what you are saying, who you are and how you can help them further down the funnel.

Lead magnets can also help you show your knowledge, showing your audience that you do actually know what you’re talking about.

As previously mentioned, have a separate welcome sequence set up for your lead magnets compared to your bog standard. This will help you segment your subscribers and see who came from where!

Create Email Templates To Save Time

Set up your templates immediately and then you won’t need to spend hours and hours each time you want to send an email. Your emails should look well designed and aligned with your brand each time it goes out, so it makes sense to have templates in place to not only save time but to give the feeling of consistency. You want your subscribers to know who the email is from before they even begin to read.

Create more than one template. You may like to send short and snappy emails once a week and then one longer, more in depth and value rich email once a month. Create enough templates for the different types of emails you will be sending and save yourself hours of messing around with design and structure each and every time!

Segment Your Audience

This is a biggie! Most businesses will have more than one audience type, whether you are service based or product based. With most Email Marketing platforms (my fave is Flodesk!) you can split your list into areas making it super easy to get down into the nitty gritty and target specific people.

When you segment your audience you can send specific emails to specific segments, and this will show a huge difference in the results.

Build The Relationship

Always remember, just because someone has signed up to your list doesn’t mean that they will immediately jump on any offers you send them once or twice a year… you need to nurture those leads, baby! You need to set yourself apart from the other people that are hopping into their inboxes each week. Give them value rich content, content that gets them excited to open your emails over and over again and then BAM. When you do have a sales pitch they will be much warmer and eager to purchase!
